Long-tailed Duck at Oualidia: it’s the first record for Morocco and continental Africa.
A female Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis) was photographed at the lagoons just northeast of Oualidia on 5 and 6 June 2014 (photo above). The bird was found by Bart Brieffies during a ‘Birdfinders’ trip that included eight birders from four European nations.
The tour leader Vaughan Ashby added “it may well be the first record for Africa as well”.
The Long-tailed Duck is a circumpolar species and rarely ventures to our latitudes, and this is indeed the first record for continental Africa. Previously, the species only observed in the Atlantic archipelagos of the Canary Islands and Madeira.

Second Long-tailed Duck for Morocco
A female Long-tailed Duck was photographed at Essaouira on 20 and 21 December 2015 by Naima Mars. It’s the second national record for the species.
After reading the news, Brahim Bakass visited Essaouira on 4 January 2015 and found the duck still at the same site (photo below).
Première mention de la Harelde boréale pour le Maroc et l’Afrique continentale
Une femelle Harelde boréale a été photographiée dans la lagune de Oualidia les 5-6 juin 2014 (la 1ère photo ci-dessus). Il s’agit de la première observation pour le Maroc de cette espèce circumpolaire. Elle est aussi la première mention pour le continent africain (observée auparavant seulement dans les archipels atlantiques des Canaries et de Madère).
Deuxième Harelde boréale pour le Maroc
Une femelle Harelde boréale a été photographiée à Essaouira les 20 et 21 décembre 2015 par Naima Mars. C’est la deuxième observation nationale pour l’espèce.
Après avoir lu les informations, Brahim Bakass s’est rendu à Essaouira le 4 janvier 2015 et a trouvé l’individu toujours sur le même site (2ème photo).
