A Pink-backed Pelican observed in the Wilaya of Mila, northeast Algeria.
Un Pélican gris observé dans la wilaya de Mila, au nord-est de l’Algérie.
A Pink-backed Pelican (Pelecanus rufescens) was recorded on 4 February 2025 at Barrage Hammam-Grouz, Wilaya of Mila, northeast Algeria.
Abdelmalek Lemgoureb, a member of the bird monitoring unit in Mila, shared the news about the presence of a pelican in the region. After confirming its presence at one of the dams in the Wilaya of Mila, a team from the Algerian Wildlife Watchers Association visited the area to watch and document this very rare bird in Algeria.
This observation is likely the first recorded occurrence of this sub-Saharan species in Algeria.

بعد معلومات قدمها السيد لمقورب عبد المالك أحد الناشطين البيئيين في ميلة عن احتمالية وجود طائر البجع (بجع رمادي) وبعد تأكيد وجوده في أحد سدود ولاية ميلة، توجه فريق من أعضاء الجمعية الجزائرية لتوثيق الحياة البرية ممثلين في الأعضاء مراد حرزالله، أيمن بولعواد، وليد صوكو مع إدريس عيسي ومليك بوستة للبحث عن الطائر النادرة جدا مشاهدته في الجزائر. ربما هي المشاهدة الأولى الموثقة بالصورة والفيديو.

Other photos of the bird that appeared on the Web around the same time as this record show a red leg ring with code A39. It is an individual that escaped with a similar one (with a ring XAH from the South of France many months ago and stayed until December 2024 in Sardinia, Italy. At the moment, the other individual is still in Sardinia, in the wetlands of the Gulf of Cagliari.
